September 2010 -  REVIEW OF TRAINERS MANUAL ON ADVOCACY AND SOCIAL MOBILIZATION ON INTEGRATED ATM RESPONSE 

The Manual that highlights the following: Understanding the disease and burden, Understanding the Community, Engaging a Community, Steps in Advocacy, Mobilizing for Integration, Interpersonal Communication, Getting the Messages Right, Strengthening the Partnership, Ownership, Monitoring, Evaluation and Documentation prepared by Consultant, required the attention of the stakeholders.  The Review which was carried out at the Precious Royal Palm Hotels in Benin had Elder Etim Duke JP as a participant in the Review.

August 2010 -  RECRUITMENT OF ATM STAFF IN SOUTH SOUTH 

As part of the processes for ATM Intervention and Community System Strengthening, staff recruitment was conducted in the month of August, 2010 in two centers for the South South Zone Candidates (Uyo - Akwa Ibom State and Asaba - Delta State) and as a Member of the South South ATM Co-ordinating Committee, Elder Duke JP, chaired the panel for the recruitment of the staff.

As part of effort to inform, educate, sensitize and mobilize the masses, stakeholders, Influencers and gatekeepers on the activities of ACOMIN Cross River State and the HIV/AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria (ATM) Integrated response, a unanimous agreement was reached by members of ACOMIN Cross River State in her last meeting of July 8, 2010 to carry out an Advocacy Visits, most especially to stakeholder in the State to showcase the activities of the Network. On the light of the above, Elder Etim Duke JP – Chairman of Dubass Duke Foundation (DDF) was unanimously appointed the Chairman of the Advocacy Committee.

June 2010 -    TOT WORKSHOP FOR INTEGRATED ATM RESPONSE IN NIGERIA

For an effective response in the three disease areas - HIV/AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria, there arose need to integrate the three Networks working on those three areas which include CiSHAN, TUBERCULOSIS and ACOMIN. Dubass Duke Foundation chaired by Elder Etim Duke JP was amongst other Civil Society Organizations who participated in the Review of the Manual at the Federal Capital Territory - Abuja to be used for the training of CSOs to effectively response to these three disease areas.

On the light of the above, Association of Civil Society Organization in Control of Malaria, Immunization and Nutrition (ACOMIN) in South South geo-political zone of Nigeria was appointed to co-ordinate the ATM programmes in South South and as pace setters, South South was the first to conducts its training which was held in the Monty Suits, Uyo, the Capital of Akwa Ibom State from 27th - 30th of June, 2010.  This workshop was attended by all the State Co-ordinators of the three networks in South South Zone.

Staff of ACOMIN National Office in Abuja  attended the workshop being the first of its kind in the Country and it was a success.

The workshop was aimed at equipping participants in the area of:
Understand the basic information on ATM in order to contribute to effective programming and the delivery of quality integrated services on these three diseases in Nigeria.

Appreciate the basic information on HIV/AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria to contribute to increased ATM interventions and services uptake through the Primary Health Care Centres (PHCs) in Nigeria.

Comprehend the basic information on HIV/AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria to participate actively and effectively in the multi-sectoral response across the three disease areas - AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria – in Nigeria.

Have adequate information on HIV/AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria for effective prioritisation of the nation’s ATM needs and the actual implementation of the prioritized interventions particularly at the community level.

At the end of the session, participants were expected to

May 2010 -    REVIEW OF INTEGRATED ATM RESOURCE KIT FOR CBOs IN NIGERIA.

OBJECTIVES

- To develop the capacity of the CSOs to contribute to the effective programming and delivery of quality integrated AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria services in Nigeria.
- To enhance the capacity of the CSOs for increased ATM interventions and services uptake through the Primary Health Care Centers (PHCs) in the country.
- To strengthen the capacity of the CSOs to participate actively and effectively in the multi-sectoral response across the three disease areas - AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria – in Nigeria.
- To build the capacity of the CSOs for effective prioritisation of the nation’s ATM needs and the actual implementation of the prioritized interventions at the community level.
- To develop the capacity of the CSOs for effective policies and institutional frameworks formulation for integrated ATM response in Nigeria.
- To enable the CSOs to contribute to an enabling health, social and political climate for reduced vulnerability to HIV & AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria in Nigeria.
- To galvanize CSOs to mobilize stakeholders for ownership and sustainability of ATM prevention, control, treatment and other interventions in Nigeria.

GOAL

The goal of this manual is to effectively equip a core team of trainers/participants with required information on aspects of integrated ATM planning, strategies, interventions and communication, with a view to strengthening the capacity of CSOs and their members as key stakeholders in the prevention, control, treatment and the reduction/elimination of morbidity and mortality deriving from the diseases.

SURVEY ON CHILD HEALTH INDICATORS FOR FEDERAL MINISTRY OF WOMEN AFFAIRS - ABUJA, NIGERIA.

Child mortality is a global problem and the greatest brunt is on AFrica, particularly South of the Sahara.  Of 10.8 million global child deaths annually 41% is in Sub Saharan Africa (SSA).  Achieving the Millennium Development Goals therefore is a priority in Africa.

 The global and African trends in child mortality show that the world average under - 5 mortality rate (U5MR) in 1990 was 95 per 1000 live births, in 2000; 83 per 1000 live births and in 2005 it was 76 per 1000 live births but in 10 African countries the under 5 mortality has been on the increase.  Regional diferences in child mortality rate exist in Africa.

SURVEY OBJECTIVE

The general objective of this survey is to assess key indicators such as immunization, nutrition, breast feeding pracices, use of mosquito nets etc on Child Health in o rder to facilitate the implementation of the Convention of the Rights of the Child and achieveing the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) as they affect the child.

Specific objectives include:

Education, health, nutrition and socio-economic well-being of children in Nigeria.

Adequacy of health and educational institutions available in the communities ro respond to the needs of children in Nigeria.

Assess the capacity of health care institutions with respect to the ehalth needs of children in Nigeria.

Provide information on Sanitation facilities available to households

COVERAGE

Eight (8) Localities/Clusters in Seven (7) Local Govenment Areas of Cross River State which include: Abi, Akamkpa, Akpabuyo, Calabar Municipality, Calabar South, Obubra, Yakurr, were assigned to the Project Director of Dubass-Duke Foundation to supervise. 

 

Commencement

Workshop at Fredrica Hotels, Off Benoni Hospital Road, GRA, Benin City started on Monday, 22nd - 24th March, 2010.  Survey started on the 26th - 6th of April, 2010.

Participants were drawn from Federal Ministry of Women Affairs, Abuja, State Ministries of Women Affairs, National Population Commission (NpopC), National Bureau for Statistics (NBS) and Non-Governmental Organization (Dubass Duke Foundation - DDF). 

Dubass-Duke Foundation (DDF) was the only NGO in Cross River State that participated in the Workshop and was selected as the Supervisor for the Team A that carried out the Survey in 7 Local Government Areas of the Southern and part of the Central Part of Cross River State.

SOCIAL MOBILIZATION AND DRAMA ON CAUSES, SYMPTOMS, PREVENTION AND CURE OF MALARIA IN COLLABORATION WITH SOCIETY FOR FAMILY HEALTH - CALABAR, CROSS RIVER STATE. 

Malaria has continued to be a major public health burden in Nigeria, contributing to high morbidity and mortality especially among the vulnerable groups. It is estimated that children under 5 years of age have 2-4 episodes of malaria annually. Malaria accounts for 30% of childhood deaths and 11% maternal mortality. Transmission of malaria is stable and perennial in all parts of the country.

Dubass-Duke Foundation under Global Fund Round-4 Programme is carrying out social mobilization of communities in the  following Local Government Areas:

= Akamkpa Local Government Area

= Akpabuyo Local Government Area

= Bakassi Local Government Area

=Calabar Municipality and

= Calabar South Local Government Area

to bring about an  increase in informed demand and use of malaria prevention and treatment products and services through Community Drama, Health Talk, One to One discussion and other community mobilization channels.

Dubass-Duke Foundation is therefore contributing towards the achievement of the following –

 

 

– Increased Number of communities reached by Advocacy and Social Mobilization through community outreach/drama

– Increase Proportion of care givers who recognize the symptoms of uncomplicated malaria

– Proportion of care givers who can mention at least one preventive measure against  Malaria

– Proportion of caregivers who recognise the kite sign and know that quality and, affordable Anti-Malarial drugs and Long Lasting Insecticidal Treated Nets (LLIN) are available in Private Health Facilities, designated pharmacy shops and PPMVs in their locality at the recommended prices.

At the end of the Global Fund Round-4 Programme, which ended officially on June, 2010, DDF achieved quite a lot in the selected communities through Social Mobilization which centered around Causes, Symptoms, Prevention and Cure of Malaria.

SURVEY ON ORPHANS AND VULNERABLE CHILDREN BY FEDERAL MINISTRY OF WOMEN AFFAIRS - ABUJA  AND SUPERVISED BY THE PROJECT DIRECTOR OF DDF IN CROSS RIVER STATE OF NIGERIA.

Objectives of the Survey

The aim of the Survey was to estimate the magnitude and prevalence of OVC and determine their well being in Nigeria. Specific Objectives:

- Determine the number of OVC in selected households and institutions in Nigeria and the spatial distribution of OVC (by state and geopolitical zone, etc)

- Determine the factors responsible for orphanhood and vulnerability among children, aged 0-17 in Nigeria.

-Describe the socio-economic wellbeing and living conditions of OVC in Nigeria.

- Assess the educational, healt, nutritional, psycho-social status and protection needs of OVC in Nigeria.

-Investigate the community-level factors (i.e. perceptions, attitudes, and practices, etc.) that impact the well-being of OVC

The National Situation Assessment and Analysis on Orphans and Vulnerable Children in Nigeria was undertaken to provide information to drive the national response to OVC in Nigeria.  The study was deisnged to provide both magnitude and well being of OVC in Nigerian and utilize both quantitative and qualitiative approaches.  The survey focused on OVC in the following sub-populations:

- Orphans and Vulnerable Children in households.

- Orphans and Vulnerable Children residing in institutions and other groups quarters.

- Homeless orphans and other vulnerable children including streets children.

Organization of the Survey

The survey was conducted by the child Development Department of the Federal Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Development - Abuja in Collaboration with Dubass-Duke Foundation - Calabar.  For this purpose the Project Director of Dubass-Duke Foundation was fully and directly involve in the exercise.
